Frontiers hold off Seagulls for 3rd Pearl Bowl title

By Ken Marantz

Akihiro Izuhara connected with Hiroki Matsubayashi on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 1:12 left and the Fujitsu Frontiers held on to beat the Obic Seagulls 15-13 in the final of the Pearl Bowl on Thursday night at Tokyo Dome.
After Fujitsu surprisingly went for two points after the touchdown and failed, Obic had a chance to win the game, but Yosuke Kaneoya's 48-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds fell agonizingly short.
The victory before 14,066 gave Fujitsu its third title in the spring tournament for the X-League's Kanto region teams and first since 2006. Obic was relegated to losing finalist for the second year in a row.
Hidetetsu Nishimura kicked field goals from 48, 32 and 22 yards out and Yusuke Shinshi rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries for Fujitsu, which knocked off two-time defending champion Kajima Deers 20-17 in the semifinals.
Izuhara completed 10 of 17 passes for 83 yards with one interception and rushed for 34 yards. Matsubayashi, who was named the game MVP, caught two passes for 26 yards.
"We knew we had to get a touchdown," Izuhara said of the final drive. "Everyone stayed focus and went hard on every play and never give up."
Obic, which got a pair of 45-yard field goals from Kaneoya in the first quarter, went ahead 13-9 late in the third quarter when Masatoshi Sugihara broke away on a 44-yard touchdown run--the longest play of the game from scrimmage.
Fujitsu's winning drive was set up by Kosuke Kamiyama's 40-yard punt return, which gave the Frontiers the ball on the Seagulls 37 with 1:35 left.
After Izuhara hit Brad Brennan for 16 yards then scrambled for one, he found a sliding Matsubayashi alone in the right corner of the end zone.

"Kamiyama's return was huge, that really set up our drive," Brennan said. "We have a lot of faith in Izuhara. He's been injured a little bit, in his shoulder. We were a little nervous going into the game. But we're stoked he came out and performed well for us."
Although in the end it didn't affect the outcome, the wisdom of Fujitsu head coach Satoshi Fujita's decision to go for the 2-point conversion will long be debated. An extra point by the sure-footed Nishimura would have meant that at worst, the Frontiers were looking at overtime.
"They have good [kick] returners, so if they got good field position, they would easily get three points," Fujita explained. "Instead of going into overtime, I wanted to go for the win and make them have to score six."
Quarterback Masato Kinoshita, who replaced Shun Sugawara in the second half, got the Seagulls close. Starting at their own 28 and helped by a personal foul penalty, he moved them to the Fujitsu 31.
The decisive play came just before the field goal attempt, when defensive end Masaki Iwakuma nearly sacked Kinoshita, who was forced to throw the ball away. An extra few yards could have made the difference for Kaneoya.
"All you want is a chance," Seagulls guard Frank Fernandez said. "We had it, but we didn't make it. That's all you can ask for."
Brennan could see the thinking behind Fujita's decision.
"I think it's a good call; we should have gotten it," he said. "It's a terrible call when you don't get it. When you do get it, you're the smartest coach in the world."
The Seagulls will get a chance for a measure of revenge this fall. Obic and Fujitsu will both play in the Central Division during the X-League regular season and face each other on Oct. 24 at Kawasaki Stadium.
