Impulse, Seagulls fill 11 spots on All X-League Class of 2010
2023/12/18 UP

By Ken Marantz

The Panasonic Electric Works Impulse and Obic Seagulls, who will battle for league surpremacy in the Japan X Bowl on Dec. 20, were well represented on All X-League Class of 2010 announced earlier this week.

Quarterback Tetsuo Takata and running back Masahiro Ishida were among six members of Panasonic selected, while Obic placed five players on the elite squad, including linebacker Naoki Kosho and defensive end Kevin Jackson.

"It feels good," said Jackson, who has made the All X-League team all six years he has been in Japan. "I'm not really playing for that, but it's good that they kind of recognize you, so I'm happy about that."

Kajima, which fell short of defending its X-League title, individually proved to have the most stars as veteran defensive back Tadanari Sano and rookie kicker Daisuke Aoki were among seven Deers named.

Takata, in earning the honor for the second straight year and third overall, completed 114 of 168 passes for 1,489 yards and 14 touchdowns with three interceptions in leading the Impulse to an 8-0 record.

Takata was chosen over Obic's Shun Sugawara, who led the Seagulls into the championship game in his first year at the helm. Sugawara was an All X-League choice in 2008 with Onward, which disbanded after that season.

Ishino, who rushed for 10 touchdowns and 442 yards during the first stage to help the Impulse win the West Division for the 10th time in 11 years, was chosen for the fifth straigth time and sixth overall.

Joining Takata and Ishida from Panasonic were punter Kenji Ogasawara, who was named for the second straight year, and wide receiver Koji Honda, center Tsunenao Sano and defensive back Atsuji Tsuji, all first-time selections.

Obic's Kosho extended his streak to seven years on the team after returning to linebacker, having been selected last season as a defensive back.

"I didn't see the other linebackers play, so I can't compare myself to them, but I believe my selection was the result of playing all out," Kosho said.

Others named from the Central Division champion Seagulls were defensive lineman Mitsunori Kihira, a 2007 selection who had two interceptions, and two first-time picks, offensive lineman Tsukasa Miyamoto and defensive back Takeshi Miyake.

From Kajima, Sano was named for the second straight time and sixth overall, while offensive lineman Kazuhiro Kuramochi won for the fifth consecutive year and linebacker Takashi Makiuchi earned his fourth award and first since 2007. Also selected were defensive linemen Takeshi Nishikawa, his third time making the grade, and Shuhei Suzuki, a first-time choice along with Aoki and kick returner Naoki Maeda.

The IBM Big Blue was the only other team with more than one player selected, as wide receiver Michihiro Ogawa, who had a league-high 27 receptions in the first stage, was picked for the first time and offensive lineman Takanari Munekami made it for the second time.

Filling the remaining spots were rookie running back Soichiro Tsukuda of the Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers, Meiji Yasuda Pirates tight end So Ninomiya, Asahi Beer Silver Star linebacker Hironobu Hoshida and Fujitsu Frontiers defensive back Daisuke Ueki. Ninomiya and Ueki were both selected for the fourth time.

Meanwhile, the league also announced the MVP and Rookie of the Year for each division. The top players were IBM's Ogawa in the East, Obic running back Masatoshi Sugihara in the Central and Panasonic's Takata in the West. Asahi Soft Drinks' Tsukuda was named the best rookie in the West, while Kajima linebacker Kenjiro Odate won in the East and Fujitsu offensive lineman Sinafoni Pereki in the Central.
